Activity Learning Hub

Activity and Learning Hub (ALH) is the core learning disability day service at Sheffield Mencap and Gateway. ALH runs Monday to Friday from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm at our purpose-built centre, Norfolk Lodge. ALH is for people aged 18+ with a learning disability. ALH boasts a range of varied groups. Activities are adapted to each individual, based on their interests and what they want to achieve. All ALH groups are designed to support people with a learning disability make progress in all our values: confidence, independence, community, wellbeing and relationships.

ALH members have access to a fantastic range of facilities at Norfolk Lodge. Members love using the catering kitchen to build their cooking skills. Professional catering skills are further developed at our ‘Mencafe’. Mencafe is a lively and popular in-house cafe where our learning disability cooking groups prepare and serve delicious lunches.

Our technology suite is equipped for digital skills groups. Activities include animation, sound and video editing. Creativity flourishes in our purpose-built art and design technology workshops. Groups include textiles, woodwork and crafts. Our large sports hall supports groups to get active. Members can have fun as they get fit with boccia, archery, cheerleading, tennis, rugby and lots more on offer.

The beautiful grounds at Norfolk Lodge keep our gardening group busy. Fruit and vegetables are grown, harvested and often used on the menu at Mencafe. The gardens are filled with vibrant flowers, shrubs and trees for all ALH members to enjoy.

There are many other courses available. Whether it’s a passion for performing arts or an interest in independent living, our learning disability day service groups can support everybody to thrive.

Additionally, many ALH groups enjoy regular visits and days out as part of their learning. This supports members to explore different experiences and build confidence in new situations.

Our activities are designed to help adults with a learning disability learn practical life skills, alongside developing and exploring their interests. Members will develop emotionally and socially, as well as achieving AQA accredited awards for many courses.

ALH welcomes new members to enjoy continuing learning in a safe, relaxed, and inclusive environment. All ALH tutors are highly skilled and experienced at supporting people with a learning disability. ALH is an invoiced service, and usually forms part of a person’s Adult Social Care Plan.
