Make 2026 the year you feel stronger, fitter and happier.
There are many benefits to exercising regularly but getting started can be challenging. At Sheffield Mencap and Gateway, we have the support you need to get into exercise – and even enjoy it! You don’t need to be a super-athlete – you just need to show up. Together, we can make this the year where you transform your health and fitness.

Reasons to start exercising
- Feel happier
Regular physical activity improves mood, confidence, and energy levels (NHS Inform)
- Improve your health
The NHS found that People who do regular physical activity have a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and some cancers.
- Sleep better
Exercising regularly can help you to sleep soundly, fall asleep quickly and increase the total amount of sleep you’re getting. (sleepstation.org.uk)
- Make new friends
Getting active in a group helps you get to know new people and have fun as you get fit together.
- Feel less stressed
The Mental Health Foundation found that physical activity lowers the level of stress hormones (called adrenaline and cortisol) in your body, which makes you feel less stressed. It also stimulates the production of endorphins (feel-good hormones!)
These benefits can help you feel good day to day, as well as keeping you healthier long term. Even a small amount of activity is better than none – it all adds up!

How to start exercising
We understand how scary it can be walking into a gym or exercise class for the first time. This is why we make sure all our sports and fitness groups are inclusive, friendly and welcoming to everybody, no matter what your fitness level is.
Our affordable evening sports and fitness groups include women’s and men’s football teams, cricket and mixed fitness. No experience is necessary to join in with any of these fun groups – we welcome complete beginners. Find out more here.
All groups are led by learning disability specialist staff, so carers can take a break for an hour knowling their cared-for person is in safe hands. Carers are also welcome to stay – we have an on-site room where you can have a cuppa and chat with other carers.
Make exercise a resolution you will enjoy keeping this year.
