The circus is coming to town!

Shine Out on Saturday (SOS) is a group for children aged 6-17 with learning disabilities or autism. They have been working on their own original show inspired by the circus. Even during lockdown, members of SOS met on zoom to share ideas and begin to plan ‘The Greatest Show!’

SOS is led by a dedicated team of Mencap staff and volunteers, supporting the children to bring their ideas to life on stage. Sessions were also delivered by professionals in dance, puppetry, circus skills and clowning, bringing even more fun and excitement to the performance.

The key aims of SOS are for attendees to feel comfortable expressing themselves and exploring their creativity. Sessions are designed to encourage confidence, develop communication and allow children to connect with others and build friendships. All activities are inclusive and can be adapted to the needs of each individual.

Two of Mencap’s other children’s projects have also contributed to the show. Our broadcasting group ‘Soundbites’ has created the soundtrack and our ‘Communicate’ group designed and made some of the props and set.

The Greatest Show includes all the fun and drama of the circus – with lots of comedy and surprises in store!
