March means one thing at Sheffield Mencap and Gateway… socks!

We love getting behind the global campaign to celebrate World Down Syndrome, and this year was no exception. Staff, volunteers, members, local businesses and organisations all got involved, rocking their brightest, boldest and oddest socks on March 21st.

Local businesses including MGRW+ and Very PC got involved by hosting their own sock days at work, while Sheffield Eagles showed their support by playing all of their games over the weekend in odd socks – joined by the teams they were playing against.

Students from the University of Sheffield also organised a range of activities, helping to spread the message further.

Most importantly, our members fully embraced the occasion by not just wearing special socks, but taking part in a variety of colourful sock-themed fun, with their creations now on display around Norfolk Lodge. Activities included creating sock-themed artwork, sock design challenges, making sock puppets and baking sock biscuits.

Understanding Down Syndrome in the UK

Down syndrome affects approximately 1 in every 1,000 babies born in the UK. There are around 47,000 people with Down syndrome in the UK today, and thanks to advancements in healthcare, education, and support, people with Down syndrome are living longer, healthier, and more independent lives than ever before.

However, challenges remain. Many people with Down syndrome still face barriers to education, employment, and healthcare. That’s why awareness events like Rock Your Socks Day are so important – they help to challenge misconceptions, promote inclusion, and ensure that people with learning disabilities are visible and included in society.

Thank you to everybody who got involved in Rock Your Socks 2026 and helped raise awareness of Down Syndrome and learning disabilities!
