Each issue we profile somebody from Sheffield Mencap and Gateway, to find out more about what makes it such a varied and special place. This autumn we get to know Leonie, our new Assistant Office Manager.

How long have you been at Sheffield Mencap and Gateway and which roles have you held?

I have been at Sheffield Mencap & Gateway for four years and eight months. I started as a volunteer and have since worked my way up to my current roles as a Saturday Group Leader for Children and Assistant Office Manager during the week. During this time, I’ve had the opportunity to work across ALH, Gateway, SNIPS, and all Children’s Services.

What have you gained through working at SMG?

Working at SMG has given me a huge boost in confidence and an overwhelming sense of happiness. The building truly feels like a second home, and I’m incredibly proud to be part of such a supportive and caring organisation.T

What are your goals for the next year at SMG?

Over the next year, I’d like to continue developing in my role as Assistant Office Manager while supporting SMG’s growth and progress. I’m also keen to keep helping as many people as possible and to gain more experience working on projects across the organisation.

Can you tell us your favourite story or memory from SMG?

One of my favourite memories is when a member unexpectedly hugged me during a really difficult day. I’d just received a hard phone call and was quietly struggling, and that moment of kindness meant more than they’ll ever know. That was my second week working with ALH as a volunteer too.

How do you balance work and life – what do you do to relax?

I try to bring a friendly and positive attitude to work so I can build strong relationships with everyone. Outside of work, I make time for family and friends. Going out for a meal, visiting art galleries, or getting out for a walk are some of my favourite ways to relax.

Finally, tell us a fact about yourself that people at SMG don’t know

I absolutely love organising, which led me to challenge myself by learning a new skill — project management. I now have three qualifications and hope to become a Project Manager one day.
