Each issue we profile somebody from Sheffield Mencap and Gateway, to find out more about what makes it such a varied and special place. This spring we get to know Adam, a member of our board of trustees.
How long have you been a Trustee at Sheffield Mencap and Gateway and what does this role involve?
I’ve been a Trustee since 2021 and Treasurer since 2025. As a Treasurer, I provide oversight of the accounts and audits to ensure SMG is in good financial standing!
What have you gained through your Trustee role at SMG?
I really enjoy the interactions with members and hearing their voices reflected in the Trustee board – I think SMG is quite unique in the way that members meaningfully sit at the heart of decisions and how the charity operates.
What are your goals for the next year?
Keep supporting the charity as best as possible, as both a Trustee and a volunteer. Ideally, spend more time seeing other projects, as I generally volunteer on a Tuesday at Gateway.
Tell us your favourite story or memory from SMG?
There are countless favourites, but I always enjoy supporting the Christmas Fair, fully decked out in an elf costume! Everyone’s energy is always infectious, which is also always memorable.
How do you balance work, volunteering as a trustee and life – what do you do to relax?
The classics, really, spending time with family, accessing all that Sheffield has to offer with food, drink, outdoors and everything else that comes with it. I’m probably most relaxed just chilling at home, pottering around, doing my best to do DIY and keep a garden!
Finally, tell us a fact about yourself that people at SMG don’t know…
As a much younger person, I once ran a half-marathon barefoot – a completely silly decision, as I was Best Man for a friend a week later and could barely get in my shoes!
