As part of the celebrations for the 75th year of Sheffield Mencap and Gateway, local artist RUOK has painted a very special mural in our sports hall – created collaboratively with our members.
The project began in February, with all of our members given the opportunity to produce a creative response to the question ‘what does Sheffield Mencap and Gateway mean to you?’. These drawings, designs and words formed the starting point for RUOK’s mural design.
RUOK then developed the initial design collaboratively with our My Mencap group. Together, they created graphics, shapes and iconography that reflected what our members told us makes Sheffield Mencap and Gateway so special to them.
The mural shows a range of favourite activities, including creativity, being outdoors, sports and of course drinking tea. It also expresses the friendship, joy and community that Sheffield Mencap and Gateway brings to our members and families.
My Mencap member Fallon said “You can tell it’s about Mencap because of the way it’s designed and the footballs, art, creativity, gardening…. I think it’s really good – the colour and design”.
The finished mural is a vibrant celebration of the community, friendships and experiences that make Sheffield Mencap and Gateway such a special place. We would like to thank RUOK and all of our members who contributed their ideas and inspiration to this wonderful project.
