Volunteers are a vital asset to Sheffield Mencap & Gateway and without them we would be unable to offer the high standard of service that we do.

We have over 150 volunteers that dedicate over 11,000 hours of support per year. Some of our volunteers serve on our executive committee and are responsible for the overall management of our organisation as Trustees and Directors. Others support people in various groups including sports, education, art, cooking, trips out and weekends away.

Our volunteers commit their time to Sheffield Mencap & Gateway for various reasons and we always welcome new volunteers. Most of our volunteers start with little or no experience working with people with learning disabilities but learn quickly and enjoy working with our friendly and warm welcoming members.

We offer a student placement programme in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University and have students volunteering who are studying a wide range of different subjects including, Education Studies, Art Therapy, Psychology and Health and Social Care.

Volunteers are fundamental to our work and we cover all expenses incurred for our volunteers to attend. We offer regular sessions for our volunteers to attend who are wanting to expand their knowledge of learning disabilities. Such sessions include, Dementia Awareness, Autism Awareness and Challenging Behaviour.

We love to hear from people wishing to volunteer but can only provide volunteering opportunities to persons 18 years and over. All volunteers are required to undergo a full DBS check of which Sheffield Mencap & Gateway will provide.

If you would like more information or would like to apply to be a volunteer then please contact the volunteer co-ordinator, Jonathan Raimondi, on 0114 276 7757. Alternatively, you can e-mail Jonathan at volunteering@sheffieldmencap.org.uk.
