Other activities

These are other Mencap activities which happen here at Norfolk Lodge either at the weekend or on an adhoc basis.

Shine Out on Saturdays

Shine Out on Saturdays uses drama, dance and art as a tool to develop self-confidence and social skills for young people with learning disabilities and/or sensory impairment, aged between eight and sixteen. It provides a great opportunity for its members to belong to a group of like-minded individuals with an interest in the performing arts and who want to broaden their knowledge and gain extra skills. It also aims to provide a safe environment that encourages creativity and where young people feel their voice matters.

You will be glad to know that the feedback is generally very positive! As with most projects at Sheffield Mencap & Gateway, we rely on volunteers to help us run efficiently and effectively. These volunteers mean we can provide extra support for those who need it and be as inclusive as possible, which is one of the aims of Shine Out on Saturdays.

Sunday Lunch Club

The Sunday Lunch Club is a monthly service for older people with learning disabilities who are living alone and also older families of people with learning disabilities.

An average of 30 people enjoy the chance to socialise, play bingo and eat a traditional Sunday lunch cooked fresh that day at Norfolk Lodge. The group decides what's on the menu and there's always Yorkshire puddings and usually something sticky and covered in custard for pudding and lots of choice!

Everybody who comes along - Sunday Lunch Club members, staff and fantastic team of volunteers - has a great deal of fun, and there's a great deal of mutual support and friendship. There has been no shortage of referrals and the club has been oversubscribed virtually since the day it was announced that more funding had been found!

The club offers a chance for people to have a break from caring or from feeling isolated in their own homes. For a number of the individuals and families who come to the lunch club it is one of their only chances to go out socially each month so they highly value the service they receive.

The Snoezelen

The Snoezelen or Multi Sensory Room has been totally refurbished and is now available for a small charge (£4 per hour). It provides a wonderful, relaxing and stimulating experience, using lighting effects, colour, textures and sounds to create a soothing environment for people with learning disabilities to enjoy. If you would like to book a session in the Snoezelen, please contact the Mencap Office on 0114 276 7757.
